Short answer
A trifocal lens is an intraocular lens with three focal points that divides light between near (reading), intermediate (computer) and distance vision. The eye's natural lens is replaced with this lens using the same technique as cataract surgery. It can markedly reduce the need for glasses; because effects such as halos around lights at night may occur, suitability is assessed during a comprehensive eye examination.
What Is Trifocal Lens Surgery?
Trifocal lens surgery is a treatment in which an intraocular lens is implanted in the eye, where it remains. It was developed especially for people with cataracts and people who have trouble seeing at near, intermediate and far distances. The trifocal smart lenses placed in the eye during this procedure aim to provide clear vision at different distances.
As the name suggests, trifocal lenses have three focal points:
- Near vision (reading a book, using a phone)
- Intermediate vision (computer screen, desk work)
- Distance vision (television, driving, outdoors)
These advanced lenses are used especially to treat conditions that develop with age in people usually aged 45 and over, such as presbyopia and cataract. The monofocal lenses used in standard cataract surgery can focus at only one distance, whereas trifocal lenses, with their multiple focal points, have the potential to reduce the need for glasses.
Choosing the right candidate is the most important step in successful trifocal lens treatment. That is why a comprehensive eye examination and an assessment of your personal visual needs are essential before treatment.
Who Is a Candidate for Trifocal Lenses?
Trifocal lens surgery can be a suitable option both for people with cataracts and for people with age-related vision problems. It can be planned for patients who need clear vision at different distances and want to improve their quality of life. Suitability, however, must be decided for each patient based on the structure of their eye and their lifestyle. Suitable candidates may include:
- People with cataracts
- People who have developed presbyopia (age-related difficulty seeing up close)
- People who do not want to wear glasses for distance, intermediate or near vision
- Patients with cataracts in both eyes, or for whom lens surgery is planned in both eyes
However, a trifocal lens may not be recommended for:
- People with disease of the retina or optic nerve
- People with corneal disease or significant astigmatism
- People with night vision problems or who are sensitive to reduced contrast
- Patients whose internal eye structures are not suitable for the treatment
Suitability for trifocal lens surgery should be decided only by an ophthalmologist, after a comprehensive eye examination and advanced diagnostic tests.
How Is Trifocal Lens Surgery Performed?
Trifocal lens surgery is a surgical procedure in which the eye’s natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens (a trifocal intraocular lens). It is usually performed with the same technique as cataract surgery, under local anesthesia, with the patient’s comfort as a priority.
Before treatment, the structure of the eye, any refractive errors and the health of the retina are assessed in detail. Corneal measurements and an eye pressure (intraocular pressure) check are also carried out. This stage is critical for choosing the right trifocal lens.
The procedure is usually performed under topical anesthesia (numbing eye drops). The natural lens is removed through a small incision with the help of a special instrument. Then a trifocal lens selected specifically for you is placed inside the eye.
The surgery usually takes 10–20 minutes, and you can usually go home the same day. Treatment usually starts with one eye; the second eye can be scheduled a few days or weeks later.
In most patients, vision begins to clear gradually in the first days after the procedure. However, the time it takes to reach clear vision varies from person to person. During this period, use the drops you are given and follow your doctor’s advice carefully.

What Are the Advantages of Trifocal Lens Surgery?
Trifocal lenses implanted in the eye aim to improve visual comfort and can give you more freedom in everyday vision.
- Trifocal lenses have a multifocal design that can support near (reading), intermediate (computer distance) and distance (driving, outdoors) vision at the same time. This can reduce the need to keep switching glasses for different distances.
- After treatment, patients may need glasses less often in their daily activities. This can be a practical advantage, especially for people with an active lifestyle. However, complete freedom from glasses cannot be promised; some patients may still need glasses for near tasks or in certain conditions.
- Trifocal lenses can be implanted during cataract surgery, when the natural lens is removed. In this way, the cataract is treated and vision at several distances can be supported at the same time.
- They can make everyday activities such as reading, using a computer, watching television and driving feel more seamless, which can have a positive effect on quality of life.
- Trifocal lenses stay inside the eye once implanted and are designed for long-term use. The lens itself does not age or change its focus over time, although other eye problems related to age or general health may still develop.
What to Keep in Mind After Trifocal Lens Surgery
Simple but effective precautions after eye surgery can lower the risk of complications and help your vision settle as well as possible.
- After surgery, use the antibiotic drops, steroid (cortisone) drops and artificial tears prescribed by your eye doctor regularly, as often and for as long as instructed. These drops reduce the risk of infection, keep inflammation inside the eye under control and help prevent dryness.
- During recovery, avoid rubbing your eye or any forceful contact with it.
- Always wash your hands before putting in your drops. Keep personal items that may touch your eyes, such as towels and pillowcases, clean.
- Your eyes may be sensitive to light after surgery. Wearing sunglasses with a UV filter in bright sunlight improves comfort and supports eye health.
- The first check-ups after surgery are very important for monitoring your recovery.
Trifocal or Multifocal Lens? What Are the Differences?
In intraocular lens (smart lens) treatments, lens types with different focal ranges are used. Two of the most frequently compared options are trifocal and multifocal lenses. Both are implanted in the eye to correct vision problems, but they differ in their focal design and in the visual experience they provide.
In this comparison, a multifocal lens usually has two focal points, supporting distance and near vision. A trifocal lens has three focal points, targeting distance, intermediate (for example, computer distance) and near vision.
With multifocal lenses, some people may notice blur at intermediate distance or difficulty when shifting focus. Trifocal lenses have an optical design that aims to make these transitions smoother.
A multifocal lens may be preferred by people who read a lot and use their distance vision often but do not spend long hours at a computer or desk. A trifocal lens may be a better fit for people who lead active lives, work on screens and need clear vision at a range of distances.
The most suitable lens type for each person depends on age, work-related needs, eye structure, retinal health and personal expectations. A detailed eye examination and your doctor’s specialist opinion are decisive here.
